The hand-held surgical instrument is designed to strike the surface of another device (e.g., surgical chisel, grooved chisel) to hammer it during surgery. It is available in a variety of designs and materials; the stem is usually made of metal (e.g., chromed iron (Fe) or high-grade stainless steel), but can be made of synthetic materials (e.g., tufnol), and tapers distally to the head. The head is usually hard, cylindrical in shape, usually bilateral and made of hard (iron/steel) or shock absorbing materials (e.g. rubber, plastic or tufnol). It can be used for autopsies. It is a reusable product.
