A gear coupling is a rigid movable compensating coupling that consists of a half coupling with outer gears, and a split cage with two inner gears. These devices are designed to transmit torque between two shafts whose axes are not collinear.
In other words, the gear coupling provides compensation for axial, radial and angular misalignment of the shafts. This is achieved due to the fact that its gearing is manufactured with guaranteed lateral clearance and with the possibility of free axial displacement of the mating teeth, and the teeth themselves are shaped with a spherical outer surface.
Compensation of deviations from shaft alignment is accompanied by slippage of the teeth.
