The diesel generator consists of a 12D49 diesel engine and a GP-312 DC generator, mounted on a common frame and connected by a plate-type coupling. It is a four-stroke, twelve-cylinder internal combustion engine with V-shaped arrangement of cylinders, gas turbine supercharging and charge air cooling.
The turbocharger, water and oil pump side of the diesel engine is called the front end and the generator side is called the rear end. If you look at the diesel engine from the rear end, the row of cylinders located on the right side is called row B, and on the left - row A. Numbering of cylinders of each row starts from the rear end.
The frame for the diesel engine and generator is welded. The frame has a tank into which oil is poured. The cylinder block is of welded-cast construction with a flat crankshaft hanger connector. The crankshaft is steel with twelve counterweights. Working surfaces of main and connecting rod journals are hardened.
