Active intrinsic safety barriers are intrinsic safety barriers combining a passive (shunt-diode) intrinsic safety barrier and various types of signal converters. They are designed to limit the electrical energy supplied to the hazardous area and provide interfacing of equipment located in the explosion-proof zone with devices and appliances installed in hazardous areas as separating elements between intrinsically safe and intrinsically hazardous circuits. Advantages of active intrinsic safety barriers: possibility to provide signal conversion; possibility to use power supply source with output voltage higher than Uo; at short circuit of intrinsically safe circuits there is no failure of fuses; allow to use one power supply source for several circuits (on condition of galvanic isolation of measuring circuits).
