Witness samples are designed to monitor changes in mechanical properties and brittle fracture resistance characteristics of the base metal and welded joints of the reactor vessel under the influence of neutron flux and temperature (irradiated samples), as well as to detect thermal ageing and associated embrittlement of the vessel metal during long-term operation (temperature samples).
