Isobutylene is used in the production of butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, isoprene, triisobutylaluminium and in the alkylation of hydrocarbons.
Isobutylene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon, i.e. multiple bonds are present in the molecule of the substance. By its physical properties it is a colourless gas with a pungent odour (it is inherent to most unsaturated hydrocarbons). The boiling point of isobutene is -7 oC, melting point - -140 oC.
