Pentacarbonyl iron (Fe(CO)5, Iron pentacarbonyl, Iron carbonyl, CAS No. 13463-40-6) is an organometallic compound, which is a yellow-orange diamagnetic liquid, not miscible with water, with a peculiar odour. Pentacarbonyl is used for: film coating of chemically pure iron from the gas phase of pentacarbonyl on the substrate or the outer surface of materials; coating of chemically pure iron on internal surfaces by thermal decomposition, such as into carbon nanotubes, framework structure-carrier catalyst and in obtaining nanoscale particles of carbonyl iron;obtaining pure highly dispersed iron oxide Fe2O3 for ferrites; as a catalyst for chemical processes;obtaining carbonyl -complexes of metals.
