The essence of determination of octane numbers by both methods is the same and consists in comparison of the tested fuel sample with standards (mixtures of isooctane with normal heptane) under standard test conditions. The methods differ in the test conditions (different engine speeds, ignition advance angles, fuel-air mixture temperature).An electronic detonometer with a magnetostrictive sensor and a detonation indicator is used to measure detonation intensity when determining octane numbers.
